In a surprising and disheartening move, Bungie lays off over 200 employees.
This restructuring aims to streamline operations amidst rising development costs and economic challenges. The layoffs affect 17% of the workforce, including many executive and senior roles. Bungie is committed to supporting those impacted with severance packages, bonuses, and health coverage.
Such news is a sad one. It’s an unfortunate turn of events, similar to Mike Ybarra’s plan of cutting out microtransactions in Diablo 4 and rebooting Overwatch before Microsoft bought them out.
Amidst these layoffs, Bungie has announced a deeper integration with Sony. Over the course of the upcoming quarters, 155 Bungie positions will be integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Sony has been instrumental in identifying roles for affected employees, enabling the retention of significant talent that might have otherwise been lost.
Pete Parsons Shares Information About Why Bungie Lays Off Over 200 Employees
Pete Parsons, Bungie’s CEO, emphasized the importance of this strategic partnership, stating, “We are committing to two other major changes today that we believe will support our focus, leverage Sony’s strengths, and create new opportunities for Bungie talent.“
Bungie is refocusing its efforts on its primary franchises, Destiny and Marathon. The studio’s expansion efforts, coupled with broader economic conditions, necessitated this realignment. “We were overly ambitious, our financial safety margins were subsequently exceeded, and we began running in the red,” Parsons explained.
Despite the layoffs, Bungie remains optimistic about the future. The integration with Sony is expected to provide Bungie with the resources and expertise needed to enhance its development capabilities and market reach. The collaboration aims to foster innovative game development, with the potential for groundbreaking new titles.

Fans Are Outraged by Bungie’s Decision to Lay Off So Many Employees
Almost everyone who has seen the unfolding events, including those who are caught within the line of fire, is furious. Though many video game creators and publishers have experienced layoffs, Bungie has already let go of about 25% of its personnel in the past year. What seems to be happening with Bungie is an extreme case of mismanagement: those who should be responsible aren’t being held responsible.
Even the Parsons statement recognized that Bungie was overworked, but there were probably a lot of decisions that contributed to this point. For example, generating the most Destiny content that the game has ever seen and preparing Marathon for launch in 2025 can burn out any game development team. In addition to all that, there were several other incubated projects waiting in line.
It was excessive because the top executives wanted Bungie to be like BioWare or Blizzard, with several massive, well-known series running concurrently. However, there was obviously no strategy in place to make such a feat work.
Additionally, those companies lacked live services such as the one in Destiny to continuously oversee. What this means is that these publishers and game developers didn’t have live services on top of whatever it was they were doing.
A Doubly Frustrating Situation No One Would Want to Be In
The fact that there hasn’t been a significant “failure” recently makes all of this even more aggravating. Bungie put forth a lot of effort to publish “The Final Shape,” which was its best expansion yet and met all expectations.
However, the truth seems to be that this path was predetermined and that, despite the information they gave their staff, there was no acceptable performance threshold that “The Final Shape” might’ve reached to stop this.
Unlike when Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League flop triggered major layoffs for its poor performance, the staff at Bungie did an amazing thing with “The Final Shape.” They totally made an expansion that everybody loved, no one had big gripes about it, and players enjoyed it thoroughly.
It’s so sad to see extremely talented people lose the jobs they love simply because the higher-ups wanted to lay some of them off. It’s as if their hard work and passion didn’t pay off, even though they worked their butts off.
What Does the Future of the Company Look Like Now After Bbungie Lays Off Over 200 Employees?
Right now, it’s uncertain what the future holds for Bungie and its properties. There’s a growing perception that Sony is gradually absorbing what’s left of Bungie.
Based on what insider Jeff Grubb has noticed, Herman Hulst of SIE may adopt a heavier hand following these recurrent leadership failures. The 155 jobs that dissolved into Sony and the opening of a new studio under its auspices are just the beginning of that. From here, it’s impossible not to see things accelerate towards that outcome.
Bungie still employs hundreds of skilled developers, but just picture what the atmosphere is like in there when 25–35% of your coworkers have been laid off in the past year. What’s worse is that, to add insult to injury, your greatest work to date resulted in the biggest layoffs the company you’re working for has ever had. Talk about being in a depressing dumpster.
