Disney and Epic Games revealed their Fortnite x Disney event—a comprehensive plan to integrate Disney’s iconic brands and characters into Epic’s “Fortnite” during the D23 fan event in Anaheim, California.
During the Disney Experiences Showcase, key figures from Disney’s major divisions, including Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Walt Disney Animation Studios, discussed their collaboration with Epic Games to create new games and entertainment experiences linked to the “Fortnite” universe.
This Fortnite x Disney partnership aims to expand the game’s reach by incorporating beloved Disney properties into the popular gaming franchise.
When Will Players Enjoy This Fortnite Disney Crossover?
Starting August 16, Marvel fans can dive deeper into the Marvel universe with the inclusion of Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four in Fortnite’s Battle Royale Chapter 5 Season 4: Absolute Doom. This collaboration allows players to uncover clues and hints related to upcoming Marvel films, creating a more immersive connection between the game and Marvel’s cinematic storytelling.
This Fortnite x Disney move is particularly significant for Marvel’s most dedicated fans, as it integrates the game more closely with Marvel’s broader narrative universe. In celebration of this event, Fortnite players will be able to snag a Peelverine back bling if they tune in to the D23 livestream in Fortnite.
What Other Inclusions Does This Fortnite Disney Event Have?
Fortnite for the first time this fall. A teaser clip revealed three infamous villains: Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, and Captain Hook for Fortnite x Disney Villains.
These characters are speculated to be part of the Fortnitemares event, which typically occurs at the end of October to celebrate Halloween. This addition marks an exciting expansion of Fortnite‘s roster, bringing beloved Disney villains into the popular game just in time for the spooky season.
Fortnite will also feature characters from Pixar’s The Incredibles, marking the first time Pixar characters join the game’s roster. This fall, players can look forward to playing as Frozone, Mr. Incredible, and Elastigirl. These beloved heroes will be available as skins, expanding Fortnite’s ever-growing lineup of iconic characters.
Players Can Also Expect a Star Wars Fortnite Disney Collaboration
Star Wars has become a staple in Fortnite, with numerous crossovers over the years, including annual May the Fourth events, themed skins, and weapons. Starting August 12, 2024, Fortnite fans can look forward to new Star Wars cosmetics in the Item Shop.
This update will feature popular characters such as Moff Gideon and Grogu (commonly known as Baby Yoda). These additions further solidify Star Wars‘ presence in the Fortnite universe, offering players more ways to engage with the beloved franchise. Players clearly have a lot to look forward to about this Fortnite x Disney event.
But This Collaboration Has a Downside That Could Discourage Players
For Epic Games, this collaboration is fantastic news because Disney is very picky about the businesses it partners with. But there is a significant disadvantage to this kind of crossover. Fortnite will not be able to include certain characters with firearms because of Disney’s control over the portrayal of some of its characters. This is quite a sad news from Fortnite x Disney.
One of Fortnite‘s main features is combat, and Disney’s restrictions significantly alter how the game often plays out. As Epic Games’s Saxs Persson said, “Not every outfit will be able to do everything. A LEGO minifig doesn’t hold a gun. Brands should be able to enforce the brand guidelines to the degree that they’re comfortable with that brand being associated with particular ratings.“
As many would’ve predicted, this prompted criticism from some internet players. People have stated that they would prefer to play battle royale as well-known Disney characters, such as Cinderella, but not being able to because Disney has to “keep up its image” has been reported to be a bummer for many individuals.
How Could Epic Games and Disney Overcome This Drawback?
Given Disney and Fortnite‘s ambitious collaboration, which aims to provide the game a distinct Disney-focused experience, certain skin crossovers might only be available in this particular mode. If not, a Disney character who is prohibited from carrying a gun will be deemed useless during the Battle Royale mode within the game.
This strategy appears to be the sole way to make sense—creating skins just for non-combat modes—but it’s already generating controversy. How Disney will choose what IP and characters receive weapon access and which do not is another issue raised by this.
It would be fascinating to see if the no-gun rule will be extended to G-rated characters. This makes the arrival of classic Disney villains such as Maleficent., Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook quite exciting to see.
Players Will Have to for the Fortnite X Disney Event’s Release
How these particular gun-free characters are going to be incorporated into the game may become more apparent when details on Fortnite and Disney’s plans for an extended world become available. Disney may make a case-by-case decision, or they could simply rely on the PG and G rating to decide which characters can carry a gun.
But, players will simply have to accept that certain famous characters might not be available in Battle Royale. Fortunately, the crossover of The Incredibles at least provides some evidence that not all IPs will be prohibited from fighting.
