Skyrim Grandma says, “I’m just doing it for fun, and it isn’t fun anymore. I’m tired of it, and I’m bored to death with it.”
At 88, Shirley Curry, known online as the Skyrim Grandma, became an internet phenomenon with people falling head over heels in love with her serene Skyrim playthroughs of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Curry says she’s finally retiring from making and streaming gameplay videos after nearly thirteen years; during that time, she built a substantial following with over one million subscribers on YouTube. Now, she’s giving up creating videos—a screech halt on a piece of her history for fans of her video content.
Skyrim Grandma broke the news through a very emotional video that she posted on YouTube, stating that she’s retiring from doing gameplay videos. She noted that she can no longer continue creating this kind of content as her recent experiences just no longer made her feel happy.
She continued saying, “I’m just doing it for fun, and it isn’t fun anymore. I’m tired of it. I’m bored with it—I’m bored to death with it.” With years of going through Skyrim have really proved that Curry has had enough of this journey and is ready to move on to more exciting things.
She also mentioned she’ll undergo another eye surgery soon, which will require her to use at least four different types of eye drops. In an upcoming vlog, she plans to share updates about the surgery. Along with this, Curry expressed also her desire to simply rest, saying she just wants to lie in bed and be comfortable. “That’s a sign you’re getting old,” she remarked.
Shirley's—Skyrim Grandma—New Adventures Outside of Skyrim
Although Curry—Skyrim Grandma—is done with gaming videos, she’s not leaving YouTube entirely. She plans to share vlogs about her other hobbies, like quilting and reading, and reassures fans she will continue creating content she enjoys.
This includes sharing updates on quilts she’s designed, reading stories she loves, and possibly even reading Skyrim books. She also mentioned that if she writes her own story, she’ll be excited to read it to her fans.
For those who miss her gaming content, her past videos are still available. She encouraged her fans to rewatch her Skyrim adventures through her channel’s playlists. With over a million subscribers and a documentary about her, Curry’s legacy as the Skyrim Grandma is secure.
Skyrim Grandma's Impact on the Community
Curry’s decision to retire from gameplay videos has sparked an outpouring of support and gratitude from her fans. Her announcement video received an impressive 12,000 upvotes on Reddit, where users expressed their thanks for her years of dedication and contributions to the Skyrim community. Many of her fans have also voiced their hope that she might return to gaming videos when The Elder Scrolls 6 is eventually released.
Despite her retirement, Skyrim Grandma’s legacy in the Skyrim community remains intact. With over a million subscribers on YouTube, she has made a significant impact on the world of gaming, becoming a beloved figure in a community that often feels fast-paced and competitive. Her slow, story-driven approach to gaming resonated with many, showing that it’s not about racing to the end but about enjoying the journey.
Bethesda games are well-known for their ease of modding, giving players endless customization options. If you still want Skyrim Grandma to be part of your adventures in Skyrim, you can add her as a follower in your next Skyrim playthrough with this special mod.
Will Shirley Appear in The Elder Scrolls VI?
In 2018, fans petitioned for Curry to be immortalized in The Elder Scrolls 6 as an NPC, a request that Bethesda eventually granted. This means Shirley Curry will officially appear in the highly anticipated game, a fitting tribute to someone who has contributed so much to the community.
While fans eagerly await The Elder Scrolls 6, the game still feels a long way off. It’s been more than six years since the teaser trailer was first released, and as of March 2024, Bethesda confirmed that early builds of the game were in development. However, no official release window has been announced yet.
Whether Curry will return to making gameplay videos once the game is finally released remains to be seen, but her involvement as an NPC ensures she will always be part of The Elder Scrolls universe.
What's Next For Her Community?
Although Shirley will stop producing gameplay videos, her influences on the Skyrim community and gaming as a whole will not fade with her. She was so loved and held such a distinctive place in a world dominated by speed and cutthroat competition because of her soft and thoughtful touch on gaming. Curry left behind so much more than her videos alone: a sense of calm, happiness, and storytelling that she brought to Skyrim.
Let’s hope Bethesda can fully deliver The Elder Scrolls 6 soon for our beloved Skyrim Grandma, Shirley Curry, to enjoy. Or else, Bethesda might end up needing to restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world they have created.
We also wish Skyrim Grandma the best of luck with her surgery and a speedy recovery.
