Huge fan of platformers? Then Astro Bot is a must-have!

Back in 2020, Astro’s Playroom stole the spotlight with the PlayStation 5 launch, showcasing the DualSense’s haptic feedback features. It gave players a glimpse into Astro’s charming world. Now, Astro returns with the fully-fledged Astro Bot, which launched in September 2024. To top it off, a free DLC is dropping this fall, fresh from PlayStation’s State of Play.

What’s New in the Astro Bot Free DLC?

This fall, you can expect a lot of exciting additions with Astro Bot’s latest update. For starters, the 10 new bots are a highlight, with cameo appearances from beloved characters across the PlayStation universe. Rescuing these bots has always been a central part of Astro Bot’s gameplay, and with the DLC, players can look forward to even more iconic faces to save. Characters from Helldivers and Stellar Blade will be joining the bot roster, but there are more surprises in store that have yet to be revealed.

Another major addition includes five new speedrun levels. These levels challenge players who love precision jumps, quick reflexes, and beating their best times. The speedrun stages push players to their limits, much like the special stages in the main game, adding replayability to the game. So, if you’ve mastered the original levels, get ready to test your skills in a brand-new way.

Team Asobi's Dedication to the Community

Team Asobi is delivering on fan expectations with the Astro Bot freeDLC, making sure there’s something for players of all skill levels. In a recent interview with Quest Daily, game director Nicholas Doucet confirmed that the DLC will focus on speedruns, one of the most-loved features from Astro’s Playroom. While the content may not be massive, it will refine and expand the speedrun challenges. Doucet also revealed that new bots will be added for players to rescue, featuring characters that didn’t appear in the base game.

In addition to these cameos, the Astro Bot free DLC will introduce leaderboards. This feature allows players to compete globally or with friends. Doucet mentioned that the team is designing these speedrun levels to push even the most skilled players to their limits. At the same time, they are creating content that feels more “toy-like” and accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Additionally, VGC reported other possible cameo bots. The game’s credits thank several third-party developers, including Ubisoft, for franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Beyond Good & Evil, and Rayman. This shows that Team Asobi may be saving these characters for the DLC. Potential cameos include titles like Croc, Worms, and Rise of the Ronin, which are also mentioned in the credits.

Team Asobi’s commitment to providing an enjoyable experience is clear. With the Astro Bot free DLC and it’s upcoming and excitingfeatures,
Astro Bot has quickly become a PS5 favorite. As the game continues to grow, fans can look forward to more surprises and adventures with Astro and his bot friends.

Game of the Year Contender?

While many expected the newly released game to be good, no one could have predicted just how incredible it would be. Sony has scored a massive win with this release, especially when PlayStation needed a big success. With dozens of reviews already in, Astro Bot is now the best-scoring full game of the year, boasting an impressive 94 metascore. This score puts the game firmly in Game of the Year contention, with many calling it one of the best platformers ever, alongside the genre’s all-time classics.

That 94 metascore makes Astro Bot the highest-rated game of the year, only behind Elden Ring’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, which most don’t consider a full game. To put this in perspective, Astro Bot outranks top contenders like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (92), Animal Well (91), and Balatro (90). While 2024 has had strong competition, many of these games are indies or remasters, making Astro Bot stand out as a full-fledged, top-tier release.
