Similar to how Fallout 76 update 2024 has big surprises coming our way, players can now benefit from the performance and graphics features of the future PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro). This is thanks to an update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 released by Insomniac Games. The update was revealed on social media today by the Sony developer, who also shared a similar update for 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Let’s hear what Insomniac Games has to say about this update and what makes it so great!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Patch 1.004 Update Focuses on Graphics and Performance

The primary goal of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 patch 1.004 is to give users of the soon-to-be console more graphic options. Options that will let them zip through and web-swing in New York with higher frame rates or better graphics.

According to Insomniac, Performance Pro mode will be the default setting. The mode targets to hit 60 FPS (Frames Per Second) through utilization of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), while maintaining the visual quality of the regular Fidelity mode. The team suggests this setting because it turns on every single ray-tracing (RT) feature in the game.

Spider-Man 2 Version 1.004.000 also offers the 30 FPS Fidelity Pro mode. According to Insomniac, this mode is the graphical choice for players who want to “experiment.” This mode lets gamers play with a few of the PS5 Pro’s new ray-tracing technologies, which may be adjusted to suit their preferences.

Some areas of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may have higher pedestrian and traffic densities thanks to Fidelity Pro. Hair detail may also be improved due to the game’s higher fidelity in this mode.

Here’s a video that compares the game’s Fidelity Mode and Performance mode:

Getting to Know the New Graphical Modes Better

Before you can fully enjoy the Spider-Man 2 graphics update, it’s best to know them better first.

The Brand New Graphics Modes

• PERFORMANCE PRO (Default for PlayStation 5 Pro)

This mode uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to achieve a smooth 60 frames per second while maintaining the image quality of the normal Fidelity mode. Every ray-tracing (RT) functionality is activated, including ray-traced window interiors, ray-traced reflections, and ray-traced on water. Most players are advised to use this mode.

While this is far from a DLC, the devs did at least provide substantial graphical updates for Spider-Man 2.

• FIDELITY PRO

For gamers who wish to test out new ray-tracing visual elements, this option aims for 30 frames per second. Higher intermediate frame rates can be achieved by independently adjusting these additional capabilities, particularly when utilizing the “VRR” or “120 Hz Display Mode” settings. In certain places, there may be more pedestrians and cars, as well as more fine hair detail.

This is perfect for Spider-Man 2 fans who are looking for some high fidelity in their game.

Brand New Graphical Toggles

Of course, Insomniac Games didn’t just stop with their graphics modes. Below are the brand new graphical toggles available for Spider-Man 2 on the PS5 Pro.

• RT Reflections & Interiors: Medium (Performance) / High (Fidelity default)

Establish the standard for creating window interiors and ray-traced reflections. Ray-traces are set to half render resolution in the “Medium” option and to full render resolution in the “High” setting. Additionally, the “High” setting will enhance the animation’s fluidity in interiors and reflections. Only accessible in the graphics mode known as “Fidelity Pro.”

• RT Ambient Occlusion: Off (Performance) / Medium / High (Fidelity default)

Extra ambient occlusion lighting information can be calculated via ray-tracing. This information is used to enhance screen-space ambient occlusion in the “Medium” setting. For more ambient lighting information, the “High” preset additionally provides a screen-space GI bounce. Depending on the scene, this feature’s visual impact will change significantly.

• RT Key Light Shadows: Off (Performance) / On (Fidelity default)

Instead of using cascaded shadow maps, use ray-tracing to determine solar shadowing at mid- to far-distances. The views of the city are most affected by this improvement. Only accessible in the graphics mode known as “Fidelity Pro.”

Keep These Spider-Man 2 Graphics Updates in Mind

While it’s easy to think that these are simply graphical updates, we must remember that great graphics help make our gaming experience more enjoyable. Of course, nothing beats gameplay, UI, UX, and other factors in making a game great, but graphics do help make Spider-Man 2 an awesome game.

It’s important to take note of these updates, especially if you’re planning to buy a PS5 Pro. That’s what many players did when the Helldivers 2 Patch Update came out.
