Let's Have a Recap—What Is Resident Evil 2 About?
Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror video game made for the PlayStation that Capcom created and released in 1998. The player controls Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie officer, and Claire Redfield, a college student.
Players aim to escape Raccoon City because a biological weapon has turned its residents into zombies. The game takes place two months following the events of the first Resident Evil. Exploration, riddles, and battle are the main gameplay elements.
With distinct plots, relationships, and problems for every player character, the branching routes are the primary distinction from its predecessor. A team of about 50 people worked for 21 months to develop Resident Evil 2, which was produced by Shinji Mikami, the director of the first Resident Evil director, and directed by Hideki Kamiya.
Fast forward to 2017 and you have Resident Evil VII, arguably one of the best FPS horror games at that time. The franchise has certainly come far from where it started back in 1998, and with this GOG release, players can relive the nostalgia of the good old days.
Here’s a gameplay of the 1998 Resident Evil 2:
How Successful Was This Beloved Game?
Simply put, it was very successful. Over 6 million copies have been sold on all platforms, making it the best-selling Resident Evil title on just one platform.
It was launched in a modified 2.5D format for the Game.com handheld and then ported to GameCube, Nintendo 64, Windows, and Dreamcast. George A. Romero, a well-known zombie film filmmaker, even created a live-action television ad as part of a marketing campaign in Japan.
Lincoln Heights Jail served as the venue for the commercial’s filming. It featured Adrienne Frantz as Claire Redfield and Brad Renfro as Leon Kennedy. A $5 million marketing budget was allocated to the game, which is around $9,701,056.9 in today’s rate.
On a side note, Red Dead Redemption is finally coming to PC, too. So be sure to check out when you can!
